Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

He served in both the South African (Boer) war and WW2 (home service). First service was as a Private S.N. 499, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war. Second service was as a Private S.N. Q209379, 12th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (QLD), WW2.

Note- his older brother, Private James Fraser S.N. 5, also served in the South African (Boer) war in the 5th QIB.

When Charles Fraser enlisted in 1901, he was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, but are included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives.

His photograph and details were published with the rank and file of the 5th QIB in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, where he nominated his N.O.K. as his father J. Fraser, Glenrosa Road, Red Hill, Brisbane. His brother James' details were also published in the same newspaper and he also nominated the same N.O.K.

When Charles enlisted again in 1942 for WW2 (under the name Charles William Fraser) he noted on his Attestation Paper, dated 1 May 1942 that; he was born at Brisbane on 9 Mar 1883 and was aged 59; he was married and a dairyman; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. J. W. Fraser, Imbil; and he had previously seen active service in South Africa.

Charles Fraser was born on 9 Mar 1883 at Brisbane, a son to John Fraser and Mary Fraser (nee Traill). He married Jessie Walker McVicar on 1 Jan 1906 in Queensland and they had 5 children.
