Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Also served in WW1, Private S.N. 613, 7th Infantry Battalion AIF.

When he enlisted for the South African (Boer) War his surname was transcribed variously as Callway, Gallaway and Callaway dependant on the document being reviewed.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB his details were published (under the name William Callway) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. Callway, Fortitude Valley. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 99, he is entered as William Callaway, with an address at Morningside. When he returned with the 5th QIB from South Africa aboard the SS St Andrew in Apr 1902 he was published in the list of soldiers aboard in The Brisbane Courier, 22 Apr 1902, as 252, Wm. Callaway

He enlisted in 1914 for WW1 under the name William Callaway. On his Attestation Paper dated 19 Aug 1914 he noted; he was born at South Melbourne and was 36 years 2 months old; he worked as an Iron Worker; he was married to Esther Callaway with no children and living at Kensington, Melbourne; and he had previously served in South Africa.

Though he embarked in Oct 1914 it was not long after that he was declared medically unfit and returned to Australia in Mar 1915 for discharge. It appears he then enlisted for the Citizen (Home) Forces and on that Attestation Paper, on p. 5 of his service records, he provided the additional information of his date of birth as 14 Jun 1881, and that he had previously served for 12 months in South Africa with the 5th QIB.
