Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

John Bennett Galligan (recorded as John Joseph Galligan by Murray in Boer War Nominal Roll) was born on 22 Aug 1874 in Queensland, a son to James Galligan and Mary Ann Galligan (nee Sullivan).

He served in the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 208 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 1016 in the 5th Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1 during which he was 'killed in action' in 1917 at Palestine. His WW1 Attestation paper on his WW1 service record held by the National Archives notes his previous service in the Boer War.

His service in both wars and the different transcribing of his name is documented in his online biography on the Australian Boer War Memorial with information provided by a descendant. Note he was also recorded as John Joseph Gallaghan in The Queenslander newspaper, 19 May 1900, against his Boer War service photograph.
