Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Alfred William Gabriel Gardiner was born on 3 Dec 1872 in Brisbane, a son to John Gardiner and Sarah Lucinda Gardiner (nee Bull). Qld BDM records indicate his third christian name as Gabrail. It appears while he was still a toddler his family relocated to Sydney, with his siblings born in NSW. At the time of his enlistment in 1900 for the South African (Boer) War he was living in Queensland.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 163 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. His second service was as a Private S.N. 497/1190 in the 28th Infantry Battalion, AIF, WW1. He appears to have worked as a Station Hand on rural properties in Qld and WA where he enlisted at Blackboy Hill in 1915 for WW1. He was returned to Australia in 1916 suffering medical unfitness recuperating at the No. 3 Auxiliary Hospital, Liechhardt, Sydney until his dischagre in 1917.

He married Mary Ann Webber in 1920 at Burwood, Sydney, NSW. Some time later they relocated to Qld with documents on his WW1 service file indicating that in 1924/25 he was residing at Waterfall Farm, Kaban via Cairns in North Qld.
