Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

A previous contributor of a photo to the profile noted that Thomas Garella lated took on the name Thomas Kevin Fanning.

When Thomas Garella enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father John Garella, Dragon St, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 78, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. J. Garella Snr., Dragon St, Warwick.

His father passed in Sep 1915 at Warwick and an obituary was published in The Brisbane Courier, 2 Sep 1915, p. 9. It noted he was originally from Italy and had lived at Warwick for 50 years (his death certificate indicates 39 years in Qld) and of his six surviving children, Thomas was residing in Melbourne.

Thomas Garella was born in 1883 by all indications at Warwick, a son to John (Govani) Garella and Biagia Domitilda Garella (nee Grossa). He was using the name Thomas Kevin Fanning by the time he married Theresa Fitzpatrick in 1915 in Victoria. Theresa passed in 1947 while they were living at East Brunswick. Thomas then married Hilda Iris Everon in 1948 and was living at Chiltern when he passed in 1959.
