Edwin Francis Gatland was born in 1875 in New Zealand, a son to James Brown Gatland and Anne Louisa Gatland (nee Cadman). He is recorded in the New Zealand Herald: Auckland Weekly News on 9 & 10 Feb 1900 as serving with the 2nd Queensland Contingent in the South African (Boer) War.
