Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- he was the younger brother of Major General Sir Thomas William Glasgow who also served with the 1st QMI in the Boer War and with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF in WW1.

Alexander Glasgow served in the South African (Boer) War, WW1, and again in WW2 (home service). First service was as a Private S.N. 163, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Sergeant S.N. 275, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1. Third service was as a Private S.N. Q187057, 1 Garrison Battalion (Qld), home service, WW2.

When he first enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private A. Glasgow, single, Red Hill, Gympie. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged 23 Jan 1901.

He enlisted again in August of 1914 with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment for WW1 initially as a Private rising in rank to Sergeant by September 1914. On his Attestation paper, dated 24 Aug 1914, it was noted that; he was born at Antigua near Maryborough and was 35 years 9 months of age; he was single and a traveller; his N.O.K. was his father Mr. S. Glasgow, Red Hill, Gympie; and he had previously served in the 1st QMI in South Africa.

He served at Gallipoli where he was W.I.A. in Jun 1915 suffering a severe G.S.W. to the left thigh. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta for treatment and to convalesce. He returned to Australia where he was discharged on 19 Jan 1916.

He enlisted again in 1939 for home service during WW2 and on his Attestation Form, dated 19 Oct 1939, it was noted that; he was born at Antigua on 19 Nov 1879; he was married and a commercial traveller; his N.O.K. was his wife Margaret Glasgow, Stewart Terrace, Gympie; and he had previously served with the 2nd LHR at Gallipoli.

Alexander Glasgow was born on 19 Nov 1878 at Antigua, Qld, a son to Samuel Glasgow and Mary Trotter Glasgow (nee Anderson). He married Margaret Carroll on 30 Oct 1916 in Queensland and they resided in Gympie and had 2 children. He was involved in community and civic activities in Gympie. He served a period as president of the Gympie branch of the Returned Services League, unsuccessfully stood for election in the seat of Gympie in the 1918 Queensland State Election; and served as Mayor of Gympie from 1930-31.
