John Edward Glover also referred to as John Edwin Glover went to serve twice in the South African (Boer) war. First service was as a Private S.N. 327 in the 3rd Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 605 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).
When John Edward Glover first enlisted in 1900 in the 4th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900, his N.O.K. was noted as A. G. Glover, Wantley St, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 4th QIB, Bk 3 p. 58, he was recorded as John E. Glover. He was invalided from service and returned to Australia where he was discharged in Brisbane on 17 May 1901.
He then later joined again, recorded as John Edwin Glover, with the 6th QIB as part of the 1st Draft of the 6th that embarked on 20 Aug 1901, some 4 months after the main 6th QIB had left. As noted by Murray in the AWM Nominal Roll, p. 519, all but 3 of the men in the 1st Draft had previously served in previous contingents in South Africa. Newspaper reports note they were being sent as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
The men in the draft were not entered on the original nominal roll of the 6th QIB but were recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, to which he was allotted, held by Qld State Archives. In his entry he is recorded as John Edwin Glover. Newspaper reports note when the 5th QIB returned to Australia he remained in South Africa for further service. He returned to Australia aboard the Norfolk and was discharged in Brisbane from 14 Aug 1902.
When he first enlisted in 1900 his N.O.K. was recorded as A. G. Glover, Wantley St, Warwick. This is understood to be his father Andrew George Brunswick Glover who passed at Warwick in 1906.In his obituary in The Warwick Examiner, 15 Dec 1906, he was noted as "Mr. A. G. B. Glover, of Wantley Street, a very old resident of Warwick." However, reviewing Qld BDM birth records for the children of A. G. B. Glover no John Edward (or Edwin) Glover is recorded, instead Edward John Glover is recorded.
Edward John Glover was born on 21 Jan 1878 in Queensland, a son to Andrew George Brunswick Glover and Esther Glover (nee David). He married Phoebe Wilson on 10 Dec 1913 in Queensland and they had 3 children.
