Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Joseph Goodchild enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. Alice Goodchild, Hemmant. In the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 6th QIB, p. 196, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Goodchild, Hemmant.

Joseph Goodchild (also recorded as Joseph Franklin Goodchild) was born on 17 Jan 1882 in Queensland, a son to Jacob Goodchild and Alice Goodchild (nee Franklin). By early 1900s he had relocated to Western Australia where he married for the first time to Josephine Clark in 1907. They had 2 children before Josephine passed in 1936. He then married a second time to Martha Agnes Caple in 1944 in Western Australia.
