Lionel Goss was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives.
When Lionel Goss enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father, Condong, Tweed River, New South Wales. In the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 7, it notes he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. A. H. Goss, Condong, Tweed River, NSW.
Lionel George Goss was born on 28 Aug 1882 in Queensland, a son to Adolph Heinrich Goss and Emily Henrietta Goss (nee Lind). His mother passed in 1886 in Brisbane and his father remarried in 1894 in Murwillumbah, NSW.
Lionel married Martha Emma Clark on 19 Mar 1932 in Queensland.
