William Gough escaped a troubled home life and difficulties finding employment by enlisting in the Boer War. After his return he married and found work as either a tinsmith or colt breaker.
In November 1914 he again enlisted, this time for the First World War. Being a horseman, he joined the Light Horse and was then moved to Remount. However, he was discharged after around a year's service. Like a few Boer veterans he was deemed to be unsuitable to serve.
William dropped dead suddenly shortly before Christmas in 1926.
