As well as serving in the South African (Boer) War he also served in WW1- Gunner S.N. 623, A.A.T.D., late 2nd Light Horse Regiment, AIF.
When James Grant enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted hos N.O.K. as his brother J. L. Grant (John Leeuwin Grant) c/- Thomas Brown & Sons, Brisbane. His mother and father had passed prior to him enlisting, his father was the publican at the Criterion Hotel, George St, Brisbane.
James Grant was born on 21 Apr 1881 at Brisbane, Queensland, a son to James Grant and Sarah Grant (nee Martin). He married Lilian Mildred Jefferies in Mar 1918 at Warminster in England while he was on active service in WW1. They returned to Australia and resided in Brisbane where they had 1 child. When he passed in 1930 his obituary published in The Brisbane Courier noted he developed chest trouble not long after returning from England which incapacitated him fo the rest of his life.
When he enlisted again for WW1 he noted on his Attestation Form, dated 11 Sep 1914, that; he was born in Brisbane and 33 years 4 months of age; he was single and a salesman; his N.O.K. was his sister Miss Elizabeth Grant, Sth Brisbane (later changed to his wife Mrs. Lilian M. Grant, Kensington, London); and he had previously served with the 5th Contingent in South Africa.
