193 Pte J.H. Grant enlisted from Longwood near Euroa, Victoria with Frank Tubb ( brother of Fred Tubb VC, WW1). James Grant served in South Africa with 2nd Vic Mounted Rifles and later as a Trooper with the Cape Police in the 2nd Division Mafeking area. James went to New Zealand after return from South Africa and married Alice Ada Wilson in 1908, they had 2 or 3 daughters. James Grant died at Whangarei NZ in Jan 1955. A very interesting letter from James to his family tells of a very hot encounter with the Boers in 1900.
