William Frazer Greig was born on 7 Aug 1880 at Dalby, Queensland, a son to George Frazer Greig and Jane Greig (nee Connor). He married Margaret Templeton on 3 May 1909 in Queensland and they had 2 children.

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 300 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private rising to Corporal S.N. 813 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
