Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Full name was Charles Herbert Grimstone and he also served in WW1, Private (rising to Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant) S.N. 3849, 4th Pioneer Battalion, AIF.

When C. H. Grimstone (Charles Herbert Grimstone) enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as C. R. Grimstone Mackay. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 145, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his brother Mr. C. R. (Cyril Reginald) Grimstone, orderly room Sergeant, B Coy. 4th QMI, Mackay.

He enlisted again (as Charles Herbert Grimstone)  in 1916 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 16 May 1916, it is noted that; he was born at Bowen and was 39 years 3 weeks of age, he was married and and working as an accountant and commission agent; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Bridget Grimstone, Proserpine; and he had served previously with the 6th QIB in South Africa.

Charles Herbert Grimstone was born on 5 Apr 1877 at Bowen, Qld, a son to John Frederick Grimstone and Emma Eliza Grimstone (nee McDonald). He married Bridget Anne Cullen on 22 Aug 1906 in Queensland and they had 4 children. At some point after his WW1 service he made his way to Sydney, NSW, where newspaper reports have him working as a storeman with Sydney City Council in 1938. He passed away at Sydney on 6 Feb 1939 as noted in a letter from The Public Trust Office, NSW- see p. 12 of his WW1 service record, NAA.
