When John Hallahan enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. Hallahan, Ipswich. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 124, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Hallahan, Toowoomba.

John Hallahan was born on 24 Jul 1881 at Toowoomba, a son to James Hallahan and Ann Cuskelly Hallahan (nee McCabe). He married Catherine Minnie Ryan on 23 Sep 1918 in Queensland and they had at least 2 children.
