John Henry Hamilton noted on attestation papers he was born about 1876 at Bombala, New South Wales, a son to George Hamilton. When he enlisted for WW1 in 1916 he noted he was single.

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again in WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 150 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Lance-Corporal S.N. 632 in the 2nd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. He served in WW1 as a Private S.N. 888 in the 37th Infantry Battalion, AIF.
