James John Hanley was born John James Hanley in 1880 at Cooma, New South Wales, a son to John Hanley and Johanna Hanley.
He served as a Private S.N. 196 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. In 1915 he was married and living at South Grafton, New South Wales when he again enlisted for WW1 in the 7th Light Horse Regiment, however, requested and was granted a discharge prior to embarking. On his WW1 Attestation Paper held in his WW1 records by the National Archives he notes his wife's name as Laura, his previous service in Boer War and the interchanging of his christian names occurs on various copies.
