Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

George Harrop was born at "Barambah" located in the Burnett District of Queensland, one of four children of James Harrop. He attended Petrie Terrace State School and at age 14 began a apprenticeship with R. W. Thurlow & Co., Ltd. He was among the first volunteers to enlist for service in the Boer War serving with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, rising to rank of Corporal.

Returning from the war he gained employment with Samuel Allen & Sons in North Queensland and later aquired a share in a general business in Hughenden established by Mr. W. Wilkes eventually taking over the business. He also later had several pastoral holdings in the Hughenden area.
