Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When he enlisted in 1901 his given name was transcribed variously as John Henderson, Henry Henderson, and Jas Henderson depending on the document being viewed.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details (under the name John Henderson) were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as W. Henderson, Elizabeth St, Sydney. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 100, he is entered as John Henderson with an address in County Durham, England, suggesting he may have originally been from England.

Murray, has recorded him on the nominal roll under the name of Henry Henderson. When the 5th QIB returned to Australia aboard SS St Andrew in 1902 a list of soldiers aboard was published in The Brisbane Courier, 22 Apr 1902, where he is listed as 253, Jas Henderson.
