Lieutenant Lachlan MacAlister Henderson in the list of recognised AIF members at Gore Hill Cemetery. We went to his grave and did our best to tidy it up - mental note ... need whipper snipper! We hand cut the grass but in fairness, did not expect to be working on such a big gravesite.
So, in looking at his service records, there's a bit of a story with LT Henderson. He was actually commissioned postumously and never served with 12 Light Horse (LH). There was an intention to commission him and for him to serve with 12 LH but he didn't get there. And, he was in fact commissioned to the rank of Captain! His wife would have benefited from the significantly greater war widow payments and his estate did not face death tax, as the military fought for his death to be recognised as 'on duty'.
He had previously served at the rank of Sergeant in the 3rd Imperial Bushman prior to signing up at the age of 34 to the AIF. He reported to duty in Liverpool in Oct 14, and then was sent to Holsworthy for duty with 7LH. A couple more moves but then served as the Adjutant and Quarter Master with the 2nd and 3rd Reinforcements Light Horse. From February to his death, he was the Depot Provost Officer. He passed away of pnemonia.
RIP CAPT Henderson. You are not forgotten.
