Henry Roy Herth (also known as Harry Roy Herth) was born 24 Jun 1881 at Roma, Queensland, a son to John Adam Herth and Mary Jane Herth (nee Young). He married Ellen Gertrude McBride on 4 Jun 1928 in Queensland.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 152 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Sergeant S.N. 230 in the 11th Light Horse regiment, AIF, WW1.
