When George Gerald Hildyard was born on 20 June 1878 in Port Sorell, Tasmania, his father, George, was 28 and his mother, Jane, was 29. He married Hilda Jane Paice in 1905 in Tasmania. They had five children during their marriage. He died on 14 July 1959 in Pontville, Tasmania, at the age of 81.
