Herbert Edward Hines appears to have had a colourful past. He was born in November 1879 in the Redfern district of Sydney. He enlisted and server with the 3rd NSW Mounted Rifles (D Squadron) in the South African War between 1901 and 1902. He married Amy Rose Mort in 1902 in the Hurstville district of Sydney. He appears to have been a Tobacconist and Hairdresser in Sydney and later in Nundah, Brisbane. Prior to his arrival in Brisbane he appears to have changed his name to Robert Edward (Ted) Brough, the name under which his death was recorded in Qld in 1942, he was the father of 11 children.
