Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When John Henry Hitchcock enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Corporal J. H. Hitchcock, Staunton Hill, Townsville. It appears he was a member of the volunteer defence force in Townsville prior to enlisting. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 52, it notes he directed part of his pay to his wife Mrs. J. H. Hitchcock, Stanton Hill Drill Shed, Townsville.
The service paybooks also record that he was originally enrolled as a Coropral and was reduced in rank to Private on 29 Dec 1899. The Stanton Hill Drill Shed was part of the North Ward Defence Complex developed from 1885 that served as a volunteer defence training facility within the suburb of North Ward, Townsville. He was invalided from service suffering the effects of Enteric Fever and Lumbago returning aboard Aberdeen to Brisbane where he was discharged 25 Aug 1900.
John Henry Hitchcock was born about 1866 in England, a son to Robert Wells Hitchcock and Mary Ann Hitchcock (nee Hickley). It is unclear when he arrived in Queensland with his parents and family. He was twice married. He married Annie Augusta Emeline Richter on 17 Jun 1890 in Queensland and they had 6 children before Annie passed in 1906. He then married widow Mary Jane Brown (nee Exelby) on 29 Jan 1910 in Queensland becoming step-father to her surviving children.
