He served in both the South African (Boer) war and WW1. His first service was as a Private S.N. 445, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war. His second service was as a Private S.N. 4507, 4th Infantry Battalion, AIF, WW1. His third service was as a Private S.N. 1836, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, Royal Australian Navy, WW1.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father Henry Hobourn, Garden St, Alexandria, NSW. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 111, he gave his address post discharge as Annandale, Sydney, NSW.

He enlisted again in 1915 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 15 Nov 1915, it was noted that; he was born at Yorkshire, England and was 41 years 5 months old; he was married and a Groom/Horse Driver; his N.O.K. was his wife Alice Hobourn, Cooper St, Waterloo, NSW; and he had previously served with the 5th QIB in South Africa. He was returned to Australia and discharged medically unfit, lumbago, in Dec 1917.

He re-enlisted in 1919 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 14 Mar 1919, it was noted that; he was born at Yorkshire, England, and was 46 years 11 months old; he was married and a horse driver; his N.O.K. was his wife Alice Hobourn, Garden St, Alexandria, NSW; and he had previously served in the 4th Inf. John Henry Hobourn was born on 25 Mar 1877 at Wisbech, England, a son to Henry Hobourn and Rhoda Hobourn (nee Smith). He married Alice Theresa McGee in 1916 in NSW and they had 5 children. It appears they were together before marrying having had 2 children prior to 1916.
