Alexander Hoelscher's full name was Alexander William Hoelscher as shown in the Boer War Service Paybooks of 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives and on his Boer War Dossier held by National Archives Australia. His Boer War Dossier notes his N.O.K. as his father C. Hoelscher, Postmaster, Aramac.

Alexander William was born on 1 Nov 1879 in Queensland, a son to Jelto Ludewig John Charles Hoelscher (known as Charles Hoelscher) and  Mary Ann Hoelscher (nee Barry). He married Gertrude Matilda Corry on 12 Dec 1909 in Queensland and they had 7 children.
