John Holdway (Holdaway) was born on 23 Dec 1859 in Queensland, a son to John Holdway and Sarah Holdway (nee Willis).

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 209 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service (recorded as Holdaway) was as a Private S.N. 680 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
