When Vincent Horstmann enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his brother C. Horstmann (William Charles Gustave Horstmann), Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB held by the Qld State Archives it is noted he directed part of his pay to his sister Miss A. Horstmann (Mary Beatrice Amanda Horstmann), Toowong.

Qld BDM registery indicates he was born Gustavus Vincent Hermann Horstmann on 10 Dec 1874 in Queensland, a son to Gustavus Cesar Horstmann and Marianne Eleanor Horstmann (nee Cotham). He married Rose Columba Kelly on 5 Dec 1922 in Queensland and they had 3 children. In the Qld BDM registry entry for his marriage it is noted he was also known as Vincent Herbert Horstmann. He was living with his family in Ashgrove, Queensland when he passed away.

He also served in WW1 enlsiting as Vincent Herbert Horstmann, Private S.N. 1139, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force AIF. On his Attestation Form in 1917 he noted his birth date 10 Dec 1874, he was single and his N.O.K. was his sister Amanda Horstmann, Toowong which was also hos permanent address. His younger brother Herbert Vere Horstmann also served in WW1, Gunner S.N. 5030, 31st infantry Battalion AIF and was K.I.A. in France on 1 Sep 1918.
