Samuel James Howe was born on 9 Jul 1879 at Devonshire, England, a son to James Lecky Howe and Mary Susan Howe (nee Tucker). He emigrated with his family at a young age. Following his service in the Boer War he married Jeanie Finlay on 18 Jun 1902 in Queensland and they had seven children.
Around 1913 he purchased farm land to undertake fruit growing on the property named Frimley Orchards. He was prominent in public life, at one stage a director of Woombye Fruitgrowers Ltd and chairman of Southern Queensland Fruitgrowers' Society, and a contributor to and organisor of fruit exhibits at local shows and the Brisbane National Show (Ekka). He also had a keen interest in the Woombye School of Arts.
