Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Arthur Edgar Henry Hughes was born on 1 Nov 1876 at Ulmarra on the Clarence River (in the Grafton District), New South Wales, a son to James Hughes and Elizabeth Frances Garthwaite Hughes (nee Payne). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB he noted, with his embarkation photo in The Queenslander newspaper, his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. E. Hughes, Ulmarra, NSW. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives also note he directed part of his pay to be forwarded to his older brother Ernest Matthew Hughes also at Ulmarra, NSW.

He married Barbara Ellen Crago in 1907 in Sydney, NSW, and they had two children. His movements in Queensland are largely unknown. It was noted in Jan 1936 in The Daily Examiner (Grafton) that his sister at Ulmarra had received news of his death at Murwillumbah, NSW, which is it the Tweed Heads area near the Queensland border. She noted his service in both the Boer War and WW1 and that he died as a result of recurring issues with a wound he recieved during the Boer War. He was buried in Maryborough, Qld, so it is assumed he had been involved in that district.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 156 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 6575 in the 4th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.
