Richard Charles Hutchinson was born on 6 May 1876 at Wangaratta, Victoria, a son to Benjamin Clay Huthcinson and Jane Hutchinson (nee Farrell). At the time of enlisting for the South African (Boer) War he was living and working in Clermont, Qld.

After the war he returned to work as a pastoralist in the Clermont area. He married Catherine Eleanor Hatfield on 12 August 1908 and had 4 children.
