When William Hutchison enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. W. Holman, James St, Toowoomba. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 79, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. Holman, James St, Toowoomba.

William Hutchison was born on 17 Sep 1883, in Queensland, a son to Mary Callaghan. BDM Qld online records only contain his mothers name on the birth and death register. His mother, Mary Callaghan, married Walter Holman on 5 Oct 1885 when William was just 2 years of age.

William Hutchison (registered by BDM Qld as William Callaghan) married Margaret Cogil on 24 Jan 1905 in Queensland and they had 2 children. When William and Margaret passed in 1939 and 1957 respectively, they were both recorded with the surname Hutchison.
