David Innes served twice in the South African (Boer) war; Private S.N. 114, 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and Private S.N. 387, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
When David Innes enlisted in 1899 in the 2nd QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 20 Jan 1900, it was noted he was married and from Raven St, Hill End, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 2nd QMI, Bk 1 p. 72, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his wife Louisa Matilda Innes, Raven St, West End, Brisbane. His wife's given names had been recorded in reverse, which was corrected when he re-enlisted with the 6th QIB.
He was invalided from his service with the 2nd QMI and returned to Brisbane where he was discharged in Dec 1900.
When David Innes re-enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. M. L. Innes, Raven St, West End. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 164, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his wife Mrs. M. L. Innes, Raven St, West End.
David Innes is recorded on Qld BDM marriage registers as David Innes Innes when he married Matilda Louisa Smith on 11 Jul 1894 in Queensland. They had 3 children in Queensland by 1900.
It is noted in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB that Matilda requested that the part of David's pay meant for her, to be directed to an address in Pretoria, South Africa. It appears she had moved to South Africa during David's service with the Paybooks recording that David was discharged in South Africa in May 1902.
