Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Charles Issell joined the 6th QIB in 1901 he was included in the 1st Draft which embaked from Sydney on 20 Aug 1901 and arrived at Cape Town on 22 Sep 1901.

The Australian War Memorial Boer War Nominal Roll compiled by Murray has him recorded under S.N. 649 in the list of men in the 1st Draft on p. 518. At the end of the list of men in the draft on p. 519, Murray noted that "All the foregoing, except three, had served in previous contingents". Charles Issell was one of those three men with no record of him appearing in any other Qld contingent on the AWM Nominal Roll.

The men in the draft had been assembled to return to South Africa as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents that were currently serving there. Men selected in the 1st Draft were not included on the original nominal roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent held by National Archives. They were, however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks held by Qld State Archives.

He was included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 86 on the bottom half of the page. The paybook entry notes he was "attested Maritzburg 5 Oct/01" which was after the 1st Draft had disembarked at Cape Town. It is therefore taken that he enlisted in South Africa at Pietermaritzburg.

The paybook entry also notes that on 10 Jul 1902 his paysheet was sent to the Australian Depot and that he did not return to Queensland. This suggests he was living in South Africa when he enlisted and remained there when the 5th QIB returned to Australia.
