John Jackson was born on 5 Mar 1875 at Nanango, Queensland, a son to John Woodward Wyndham Jackson (Police Magistrate) and Anna Maria Jackson (nee Hume).

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 177 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 2452 in the 52nd Infantry Battalion and Australian Vetinary Corps AIF, WW1. At the time of his enlistment in 1916 he noted he was single and 41years of age.
