Biography contributed by Robert Kearney

MASON, Charles Frederick (C F), Private from Tarcoola born 1879, single, When he later served in 2nd Battalion Australia Commonwealth Horse he added his stepfather’s surname to his own and served as Lieutenant Mason-Johnson

"Lieut. C. F. Mason-Johnson is the foster-son of Mr. J. C. F. Johnson, who has been ever to the front in his interest in the South Australian contingents. After a
university career he occupied the position of assayer and purser to the Glenroth Prospecting Association at Tarcoola. His war service consists of 15 months' duty in the first contingent, under Mr. Howland. He went right through with that body, and saw 37 engagements. He had to decline an offer of a commission in the imperial army and return home on account of the serious
illness of Mr. Johnson. The young lieutenant is 22 years of age."

Biography contributed by Pamela Smith

This is my Grandad.  He was born in 1871 in Picton, NSW and died in August 1956, aged 85, when I was six years old.

Grandad was adopted around 1879-1880, when he was about 8 years old, by Joseph Colin Francis Johnson, South Australian Member of Parliament.

His first son, my Father, was named Francis Anthony Mason-Johnson.  My name is Pamela Shannon Smith (nee Mason-Johnson, now 70 years old).

Grandad's married his first wife (my Great-grandmother) Elsie Aitken, in 1914.  He was re-married in 1924, to Olive Miller.

I would very much like to know who Grandad's parents were and why they adopted him out.  If anyone has any information, could you please contact me?
