When William Johnston enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Johnston, Bowen Hills. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 78, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. (Alexander) Johnston, Down St, Bowen Hills.
William Johnston was born on 26 Jul 1874 in Queensland, a son to Alexander Johnston and Eliza Johnston (nee Phipps).
