William Henry Johnston served in both the South African (Boer War) and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 107 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 202 in the 41st Infantry Battalion AIF WW1.

He married Esther Norton on 3 Sep 1910 in Queensland, Australia.
