John Jordan, born in Flemington, Victoria, served twice in the South African (Boer) War in a Queensland and then a Victorian contingent. First service was as a Private (rising in rank to Corporal) S.N. 23 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Corporal S,N, 591 in the 2nd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 313 & 480; National Archives Australia- Boer War Dossier for 2nd service).
