Mr. J. Ernest Joseph died at his home at Northbridge, Sydney, a week ago, on Sunday night Mr. Joseph saw service as captain in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen during the South African War, and took a prominent part in the pursuit of De Wet. Before the South African War, he took an active interest in the Queensland Imperial Bushmen and Mounted Infantry and for some years was in command of the squadron at Mackay. During the shearers' strike in Queensland in the early eighties, when the militia was ordered to the western district he was in command of a troop. He took an active part in recruiting for the Great War, in which two of his sons served. During his many years' residence in Mackay he evinced a practical interest in public affairs, more especially in the Harbour Board, of which he was chairman for several years. In Sydney he was the first manager of the Associated Northern Dailies. He is survived by Mrs. Joseph and three sons. Mr. A. E. Joseph (secretary of the Queensland Country Press Association), and Mr. A. Joseph (managing director of the 'Northern Daily Leader'), Tamworth, New South Wales, are brothers.
