Walter Joseph Keightley birth details are unknown, however, his Qld BDM death registration notes he was the son of Joseph Keightley and Mary Keightley (nee Conell). At the time of his enlistment for the South African (Boer) War he noted his N.O.K. as his father, Joseph Keightley residing at Dalveen, a small town in the Southern Downs region of Qld near the NSW border.
