Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Mark Kimpton was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives.

When Mark Kimpton enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father, Morinya (Moruya), New South Wales. In the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 7, it notes he directed part of his pay to Mrs. S. Binns, Guilford House, Wynyard Square, Sydney, and that his address after discharge was Moruya, NSW.

Mark Kimpton was born in 1877 at Broulee, NSW, a son of Samuel Kimpton and Sarah Mary Kimpton (nee Jessop). He was part of a large family with 15 siblings, one being his elder sister Susan M. Kimpton born in 1860. Susan had married Christopher J. Binns in 1882 and it was her that was recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks.

He married Cecilia Florence Bettini in 1904 at Annandale, NSW, and they had 2 children.
