Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Louis Kingsley served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 69, 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Sergeant S.N. 545, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
When he joined the 3rd QMI in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 3 Mar 1900, it noted he was single and residing at 32 Herbert St, Spring Hill, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 3rd QMI, Bk 3 p. 19, it is noted that his ledger total was transfered to the paybooks for the 5th QIB, whon he joined them following completion of his service with the 3rd QMI.
Murray, in his compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll on p. 504 to 505, notes members of the 5th QIB who enrolled/enlisted in South Africa.
Louis Kingsley enrolled in South Africa with the 5th QIB and as such was not recorded on the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland (Imperial Bushmen) Contingent held by National Archives. He was however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 150, where it is noted he transfered from the 3rd QMI and was attached to the 5th QIB on 9 May 1901.
The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, reported that Sergeant Lewis Kingsley, remained in South Africa for further service when the 5th QIB returned to Australia. The Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 150, notes he sailed for England on 15 May 1902 aboard Manhatten and was discharged on 13 Jun 1902, it's assumed in England.
