Frank Edgar Kirkup was born in 1876, a son to James Kirkup and Charlotte Kirkup. He was in Queensland when he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and noted his N.O.K. as his brother F. Kirkup, Strahan, Tasmania. On his return from the South African (Boer) War he returned to Hobart, Tasmania, where on 1 Mar 1905 he married Lylia Kate Drake and they had 1 child. 

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 135 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private (rising to Bombardier) S.N. 1957 in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment transfering to 4th Division Ammunition Column AIF, WW1.
