Charles Harold Kokkinn (BDM Qld birth registered as Charles Fritzof Kokkin) was born on 23 Aug 1881 in Queensland, a son to Carl Fritzof Olaf Kokkinn and Margaretta Kokkinn (nee Brown).

He was invalided home from the South African (Boer) War and discharged in Brisbane in Apr 1902. At some time afterwards he relocated to Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa where he worked as a dining car steward for South African Railways.
