When Julius Kraut enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. Kraut, single, Gatton. Despite that, he appears to have been residing at Laidley and is memorialised on the Laidley, South African Boer War Honour Roll board now located in the Laidley Cultural Centre.
In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 61, it is noted he directed part of his pay to W. Kraut, Gatton, who was his younger brother William. The paybooks note that, like a number of the men, he was seconded to the South African Police between 1 May 1900 and 7 Nov 1900 and was granted his discharge in South Africa after 30 Nov 1900.
His father Franz passed in May 1902 and in his obituary published in The Queensland Times, 3 May 1902, it advised that his son Julius Kraut, after having served with the first contingent, was now serving with the Military Police Force in South Africa. It is unclear when he returned to Australia prior to marrying in 1907.
Julius Kraut was born on 4 Jan 1871 in Germany, a son to Franz Kraut and Renata Kraut (nee Brucksch). He married Agnes Robeck on 27 Feb 1907 in Queensland and they had 8 children.
In 1954 an article was published in The Courier Mail about him missing his first Anzac Day service as transcribed below.
A Day Late- The Courier Mail, Mon 26 Apr 1954, p. 3
Laidley (by telephone) - Most disappointed man in the Lockyer last night was 83-year-old Boer War veteran, Julius Kraut, a Laidley war pensioner.
He has missed his first Anzac Day service- and all because someone told him it was on to-day, not Sunday.
Last night, a reporter found him at home, polishing his medals- for the day that will not eventuate.
