Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

George Egbert Lambert served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Bombardier S.N. 7, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry (Machine Gun Section). Second service was as a Private S.N. 606, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.

When he joined the 1st QMI in 1899 he was recorded in local newspapers and in the original nominal roll for the 1st Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, as single, a member of the Machine Gun Section of the 1st QMI, and his address was Victoria Barracks, Brisbane. There were 17 men in the Machine Gun Section all of whom had the same address of Victoria Barracks. They were not entered with the rank and file in the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 1st QMI suggesting these men were permanent members of the Queensland Defence Force.

He was invalided from his service in the 1st QMI due to contracting Enteric Fever and returned to Australia where he was discharged in Brisbane on 8 Mar 1901. His Boer War Dossier, held by National Archives, notes his address post discharge was c/- Dr. Lambert, Berrima, NSW.

He then later joined again with the 6th QIB and was selected as part of the 1st Draft of the 6th that embarked on 20 Aug 1901, some 4 months after the main 6th QIB had left. The men selected in the 1st Draft in the main consisted of men who had previously served in previous contingents in South Africa, and were being sent as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.

The men in the draft were not entered on the original nominal roll of the 6th QIB but were recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives. In his entry it is noted he rose through the ranks (Corp.; Sgt.; Sgt. Maj.; and Reg. Sgt. Maj), and newspaper reports note when the 5th QIB returned to Australia he remained in South Africa for further service. His Boer War Service Paybook entry notes he was transferred to the I.I.C. Dept. and forwarded to England.

George Egbert Lambert was born in 1872 at Queanbeyan, NSW, a son and 1 of 16 children, to Dr. George Prowd Lambert and Elizabeth Lambert (nee Warner). His father was a medical doctor who practised at Queanbeyan, and as Medical officer at Wollongong and Berrima jails. After his discharge from the 1st QMI he returned to Berrima where his father was still located, his father later passing at Berrima in 1904.

It is unclear, if as indicated in the Boer War Service Paybooks, whether on completion of his service with the 5th/6th QIB he travelled to England. If he did then at some point he made his way back to South Africa where he is recorded as passing in Mar 1950.
