Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When James Lloyd first enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. Lloyd, single, care of Mrs. D. Lloyd, Nelson Road, Gympie. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 65, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. Lloyd, Nelson Rd, Gympie. During service he contracted Enteric Fever and was invalided home returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 8 Sep 1900.
In 1902 he enlisted again with the 7th BACH and on his Attestation Paper, dated 25 Apr 1902, it is noted that; he was born at Rhonda (Rhondda) Valley, South Wales, and was 21 years 9 months of age; he was single and a miner; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs. M. Lloyd, Nelson Road, Gympie; he had previously served with the 1st Qld Contingent; his permanent place of residence was Gympie; and his religion was Welsh Church. The unit arrived in South Africa on 22 Jun 1902 after peace had been declared and were ordered to return to Australia where he was discharged at Brisbane on 9 Aug 1902.
James Lloyd was born on 1 Apr 1880 at Rhondda Valley, South Wales, a son to Daniel Lloyd and Maria Lloyd (nee Stephens). It's unclear when he emigrated with his parents from Wales, but they were resident in Queensland (Gympie) by May 1885 when the first of four further siblings were born. His father was involved in a horse riding accident leading to his untimely passing at Gympie in 1898.
After returning from the war it appears he ventured to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, where relatives were living, it's assumed to persue mining work. Unfortunately, he contracted appendicitis leading to complications and his untimely passing in 1909.
