James Locke was born in 1869-70 in England. He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private (rising to Corporal) S.N. 143 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 251 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
